WSA Winnipeg to play exhibition series vs. WPSL teams

WSA Winnipeg is proud to announce that the North Stars women’s soccer team has been invited to compete in exhibition games against teams from the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in the spring of 2020.

The invitation to play against teams in the WPSL comes in anticipation of WSA Winnipeg becoming a full member of the league in 2021.

“Winnipeg is full of talented women’s players competing at the highest levels of the sport and we are excited to test ourselves against some of the best amateur competition in North America,” WSA Winnipeg president Eduardo Badescu said.

The WPSL is a national women’s soccer league that strives to provide the highest level of developmental
opportunities for amateur players.

In June, WSA Winnipeg will travel to Minnesota for a two game exhibition series. They will play at Mankato United SC on Friday, June 12th and against Rochester United FC on Sunday June 14th.

“We held tryouts to evaluate potential players for this series and were blown away by the level of interest,” Badescu said. “Our roster is not yet set but will be made up of Winnipeggers that play at the NCAA and U-SPORTS level, or recent graduates from those programs.”

Formed in 2009, the WSA North Stars won four provincial titles in their first seven years, representing the province at the National Championships in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2016 under coach William Rosales. In Winnipeg Women’s Soccer League action, the North Stars are undefeated in regular season play dating back to the start of the 2017 season, winning all 15 matches in 2019.

Details of the WSA North Stars selection process will be available in the near future with the team beginning full training in May.
